Ada Lovelace
English mathematician and writer, 1815–1852
Ada Lovelace wrote the first published algorithm meant for a machine. Working from Charles Babbage's plans for the Analytical Engine, she argued that a computer could compose music and manipulate symbols — not merely crunch numbers. She died in 1852, at thirty-six.
